Repcon Associates has proven capacity and tradition of executing assignments in the entire spectrum of Environment and Development.
Our past involvement can be segregated into five broad but interrelated themes.
1. Baseline Surveys:
Our capability and excellence is in the range of Feasibility Studies and Appraisals for new projects, Baseline surveys among other activities towards identification and formulation of projects. A few illustrative examples are provided here below:-- Baseline Survey in the ADB funded Feasibility Study and Design of an Integrated
Catchment Conservation and Management Programme for the Ewaso Ng'iro North Drainage
Basin. This assignment involved evaluation and design of investment packages with
potential to arrest and reverse environmental degradation cycles currently widespread in the
ecologically fragile Drainage Basin Five in Kenya. The assignment was undertaken as part of the
Ewaso
Ng'iro North Catchment Conservation and Water Resource Management Study and was executed in
association
with Nippon Koei of Japan.
Client: The Ewaso Ng'iro North Development Authority and the African Development Bank. - The ADB funded Baseline Survey of the Ewaso Ng'iro North Drainage Basin that aimed
at documenting the baseline Environmental information (resource utilization patterns, land-use
conflicts and baseline environmental problems) as part of the on-going study of Ewaso Ng'iro North
River Catchment and Water Resources Study. The study was undertaken jointly with Nippon Koei of
Japan for the Ewaso Ngiro North Development Authority.

2. Pre-Project Impact Assessment:
Repcon Associates has previously provided services in the whole range of Environmental Assessments including Environmental Scoping Studies, Environmental Impact Assessments, Policy analysis, Strategic Environmental assessment, corporate environment policy formulation and capacity building. Few examples are listed below:-- Strategic Environmental Assessment in the LAPSSET Corridor Infrastructure Development Project: The Government of Kenya is developing the LAPSSET Corridor as Vision 2030 flagship aimed at opening up Northern Kenya Counties for economic development. Repcon Associates was retained to manage the SEA process for the project which comprises a new sea port at Lamu connected the interior by an international class highway, a standard gauge railway, oil pipelines terminating at the national borders with South Sudan and Ethiopia.
- Strategic Environmental Assessment in the Masterplan for the Mombasa Special Economic Zone (Dongo Kundu): The Government of Kenya is developing a Masterplan to guide realization of the Mombasa Special Economic Zone, a Vision 2030 Flagship Project. Repcon Associates was retained to conduct SEA No 26 for the proposed masterplan.
- The World Bank funded Zanzibar Secondary Education Project targeting improvement of
secondary education in the Isle. Repcon associates prepared an ESMF at the invitation of the World
Bank.
Client: RGZ and the World Bank. - Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Studies for 24 Community Based Flood Management
Projects on Nyando River Basin. Repcon Associates coordinated the EIA and community
consultation process for the proposed development of 24 Community Based Flood Management Projects on
Nyando River Basin leading to production of 24 EIA reports all of which were approved by NEMA.

3. Resettlement Planning:
It is now a mandatory requirement for all projects planning process to incorporate RAP studies to guide resolution of displacement impacts. OP4.12 of the World Bank and the JICA Guidelines for Environmental and Social Considerations was the main reference in RAP studies which our company has successfully undertaken for diverse clients. A few examples are illustrative:-- The RAP Study for the Project for Infrastructural Development for the Mombasa Special
Economic
Zone. Repcon Associates was hired by JICA/Nippon Koei to manage the RAP Process in the
Project
targeting development of Infrastructure (Water Supply, Drainage, Land formation among others) in the
Mombasa Special Economic Zone area.
Client: JICA and Nippon Koei. - RAP Study in the World Bank advisory Mission to the National Land Commission.

through Michael Wairagu was part of an international mission put together by the World Bank to
prepare guidelines for Resettlement Planning in Compulsory land Acquisition. Appropriate guidelines
were prepared.

4. Post Project Impact Audit and Monitoring:
Activities here have included on impact assessments, mid and end term evaluation's, monitoring among others.- Final Evaluation of Maendeleo Agricultural Trust Fund (MATF) Round V Projects in Kenya
Uganda and
Tanzania. Under Round V, the MATF had supported 6 projects which were in their final
stages by
20111. Our company was competitively selected to undertake the final evaluation of Round IV Projects
scattered in the three E. Africa states.
Client: Farm Africa. - Study to evaluate the Social-economic and Environmental Impacts of wood carving in
Kenya. This study is being undertaken as part of the global evaluation of the
WWF/UNESCO/KEW People and
Plants Initiative. The Kenyan component of PPI focused on introduction of incentives to facilitate
adoption of alternative trees by the wood carving industry.

5. Integrated Natural Resource Management:
Repcon associates have a passion for catchment conservation and may well have pioneered consultancy in this field. Activities here have focussed on design of Sub-catchment Management Plans (SCMPs), Integrated Water Resource Planning (IWRM), support to community action in conservation, among others. Selected examples here include:-- Design of Integrated Catchment Conservation Plan for Flood Control in the Nyando River
Basin. Our role was to develop a catchment conservation plan including modalities for
community
mobilization towards implementing conservation for purposes of flood mitigation in the Nyando.
The output was development of a catchment conservation plan dubbed the Nyando River Catchment
Conservation Plan 2020.
Client: WRMA and JICA - Catchment conservation advisor to the Government of Malawi-funded Shire Valley irrigation Design Study: Our role was to advice on modalities for catchment conservation in the development of irrigation in the Lower Shire area of Malawi.
